What Interested Us: We’ve been trying to line James up for about a year to tell his story in detail! We finally got him after about 6 months of false starts! 

What an inspiration…starting out as a franchise owner, through to multi-store owner with Boost Juice, then eventually into a corporate finance role helping set-up franchise funding.

 Then it gets really interesting, as he took the leap in setting up his own dedicated franchise finance company, that shortly after was so successful that a publicly listed finance company took a large stake. Great story.

What Interested Us: Kasey is so driven to be the best she can be. She is especially driven to be the best she (and Ben her husband) can be, within the Sleepy’s franchise owner network. 

So much of our conversation kept coming back to the goals of being the top performer in the network on all sorts of measures. Kasey is practical and straight forward and can easily identify what value she gets out of being in her franchise business. Very goal focused, very methodical and with a consistent approach.

What Interested Us: We really wanted to talk with Mark after his franchisor, Gary Shearer of SafetyQuip, told us about a franchise owner who had set his business up to run while he toured Europe with his wife Bev. 

What a great story we thought! As is always the case, there is so much more to the story. 

It’s not a case of ‘look how easy it was to do, just ran on auto-pilot’ – not at all. It’s an example of having a very clear goal, and implementing a plan to achieve it. It’s also a story about family and working in business with your family, which we know is the dream of so many mum’s and dad’s out there. We love what Mark, Bev and Ryan have done.

What Interested Us: Len has arguably sold more franchises than anyone else in Australia, which says a lot. It especially says that he knows a hell of a lot about franchising as a business model, and how to go about making the most of it. 

As a very early ex-franchisee of a franchise that was clouded in controversy about 15 years ago (Kleenmaid), Len overcame those early career challenges, and has gone on to be co-founder of Australia’s largest dedicated franchise broker group. 

He has some timely advice to the franchise sector and is urging bold action to many if they are to survive. His process and rationale of how and why he has totally transformed his franchise business model is a must read – especially for franchisors.

What Interested Us: Consumer-level awareness of cybersecurity has been ever-increasing with the repeated data breaches of major online companies. 

We came across John at the Melbourne franchising expo in late 2018 where he was launching the franchise concept. His data and examples on digital security are sobering. 

Setting his business up so his specialist cybersecurity team provides the bulk of the services, is an interesting way he has gone about making the growing cybersecurity business possible for non-cyber security experts. Certainly a growing market segment for the future.

What Interested Us: Jayesh caught our attention with his focus on helping small to medium sized businesses to easily tap into the cost-effective global market of talent. 

Many business owners would love better control of their labour costs in this way, but have little idea how to properly go about it. This is what Jayesh is bringing to the table. What Interested Us: When Darren told us about a franchise co-ownership approach that he was putting the finishing touches to, we knew it could potentially be the future of franchising. 

He tells us about the growth of the Stellarossa café brand since 2011 and in particular, the way the brand has addressed the location issues from CBD sites into suburban shopping centres with a South East Queensland focus. But, he had us at hello, when he details the model where he partners with franchise owners equally in a business for equal risk. Even better, helping people with only 10% ownership to help them get into business with their mostly their sweat equity.

What Interested Us: Rob is a very interesting guy. His technology business has so many capabilities, it seems almost at times he doesn’t know which one to tell us about! Without doubt a leader in Point-of-Sale (POS) and security technology in the country, he has worked closely with many franchise brands across a range of technology requirements. 

What really got our attention was the fact that he practically solely designed and built the POS system for a coffee brand (Zarraffa’s Coffee), taking them from around 15 sites to 100+ with that technology. 

His approach for franchises in bringing all touch points of all their technology under a support umbrella with a single point of contact, is genius.
