Narelle & Phil, Muffin Break, Lismore Square - Franchise Owner Short Story


Franchise Owners of the biggest Muffin Break in Australia, Narelle and Phil welcomed us into their store in Lismore Square, NSW for both a tour and a chat about the business.

We covered their opening, their due diligence as they searched for a business, their love of baking fresh, coffee, customers and more!

Narelle & Phil's Story (in text)

"Narelle - Hi, I'm Narelle, I'm the franchisee for Muffin Break Lismore Square with my husband Phil.

We're the biggest Muffin Break in Australia.

So come on in and I'll show you.

Narelle - I was in administration and a little bit of management and a bit of financial, like in that sort of background.

Phil - I was in procurement, financial management, project management, business analyst.

Narelle - Just wanting to do something for ourselves and our family.

Phil - We spent probably two and a half years with due diligence and looked at lots.

We were very close with about four others that we were heading.

Narelle - But we really like the making fresh every day and like a lot of other cafes and things they have to buy in, and you don't get a lot of making fresh and we like that concept of making fresh every day.

And it's similar to a bakery, but we didn't want to go down the bakery, so, yeah, this just fit. 

Phil - That’s…The customers have just said, that is amazing.

Every coffee shop we looked at, everything's frozen.

What we liked is we liked the option of having different muffins every day, having new products every day.

We have customers at the moment who come in and say, can you tell us what you're making tomorrow?

And I say, no, because it depends what mood them in the morning.

We looked at the bakery because I love a bakery.

Yeah, I love the smell of it. I love bread, I love that hot smell.

And this was as close to that as possible.

Narelle loves customers, loves coffee.

So, it was nice and easy.

How do you put the two of them together? 

A Muffin Break. Yeah. That's your answer.

But the best thing we've got, I'm out the back.

Everything that happens out the back, ordering systems, everything is my baby.

And Narelle’s out the front with the team, passionate with the customers, driving super outcomes.

That's how we've worked it really well. 

Narelle - And it is working well.

Phil - So, yeah, we're busy. We are busy.

Is it busier than what we expected?
